The GHBA is Building a Greater Houston everyday. Through the dedication of its members and staff, the GHBA supports the key economic engine that drives the healthy Houston economy. Houston offers one of the most affordable standards of living in the country, and a big part of this strength is the low cost of home ownership. The members of the GHBA represent some of the most proficient professionals in their fields, and the GHBA plays a significant role in strengthening their expertise through education, collaboration, public service and governmental affairs.
The Greater Houston Builders Association members construct approximately 90 percent of all new homes built each year in Houston and its surrounding communities. Last year, that figure translated into an all-time high of more than 45,000 new homes.
The new homes covered at least eight counties – Harris, Montgomery, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Liberty, Matagorda, Waller, and Wharton – strengthening local, state, and national economies.
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) estimates that the construction of 1,000 single-family homes generates: 2,448 full-time jobs; $79.4 million in wages; and $42.5 million in federal, state and local revenues and fees. Translating those numbers, the local industry generated 110,000 jobs; more than $3.5 billion in wages; and $1.9 billion in government revenue in 2005.
Additionally, each new home owner spent an average of $8,900 for furnishings and décor. That’s another $4 billion pumped into the local economy for a total of $9 billion delivered as a result of new home construction. That figure does not even take into account the millions of dollars spent on remodeling or resale.
Founded in 1941, the Greater Houston Builders Association is one of the country’s oldest homebuilder associations and the ninth largest. With more than 1,700 member companies, its membership includes anyone who is associated with the housing industry, from developers to remodelers and from builders to title companies and CPA’s.
A voluntary, nonprofit trade association, GHBA’s mission is “to be the voice of Houston’s residential construction industry, serving its members and the community by educating and advocating professionalism and quality housing.” |
