A great frustration after a major remodeling project (or new construction) can be the “little irritations” of bothersome hardware items, which “aren’t right.” Door latches that don’t hold, door levers that sag, or knobs and deadbolts that don’t operate smoothly. And those unlevel towel bars or paper holders can leave a real sour taste after the job is completed!
These problems can occur when a contractor or homeowner purchases their door hardware, cabinet hardware or bathroom accessories from one supplier but has them installed by another. The manager of the installation division, a showroom dealer for plumbing and hardware, showed us the complexity and variety of installation circumstances which can cause problems. Installers who are not trained to install mechanical products, like locks and door knobs, or do not have the necessary tools or experience, can unknowingly leave behind a frustrated homeowner. Call-backs are a nuisance for both the contractor, the installation crew, and the homeowner. Its unnecessary time and aggravation for everyone involved and it leaves a bad taste about an otherwise good project.
One recommendation is to assure that your remodeling contractor or new home builder only buys hardware products of a quality level that you’re sure of and buys these from those who will also install the goods. Installers of door hardware and bathroom accessories are not required to be licensed or trained like other trades, such as plumbers. As a result, the actual installer may not be familiar with the task he’s asked to do and a poor job can result.
As with any purchase, know whom you’re dealing with and buy items which will be installed by the supplier. This will eliminate the finger pointing of which is wrong - - the product or the installation? A proper installation provides the pleasure of both the product’s beauty as well as its functionality.
