Kitchen and Bathroom Stone Trends

Kitchens have become the focal point of many US households while bathrooms are being designed with more space and attention to detail.  Natural stone is the premier choice for countertops in these spaces.

The AIA Home Design Trend Survey, conducted quarterly with a panel of 600 architecture firms that concentrate their practice in the residential sector, found that natural stone counter top popularity has increased with over 53% of the firms interviewed.  Spaces are enhanced aesthetically and property values are increased by adding natural stone such as marble and granite.  Natural products are the leading innovative design trend.

Of the firms interviewed, 30% reported improved billings and inquiries for kitchen and bath remodeling.  ”Both the square feet devoted to kitchens and the number of separate cooking facilities throughout the home are increasing, including the additions of outdoor kitchens in many areas of the country.  As far as specific trends in kitchen deign, granite countertops, natural wood cabinets, and drinking water filtration systems are especially popular,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PHD, Hon. AIA.

Remodeling is possible in large part to the great financing packages available.  According to David Berson, vice president and chief economist for Fannie Mae, mortgage rates will continue to stay under 6.5 % for a fixed rate, 30-year loan.  This aids in growth and stability of the overall housing market.

Granite importation has grown sizably over the past few years.  Granite is more readily available in a larger variety of colors and price points.  In 1996, the country with the largest value in granite imports was Italy with $69 million, taking 44.7% of the market share.  In 2005, Brazil was the leading importer of granite with $398 million in value, taking 32 % of the market share.  Italy followed with $298 million in sales.

Marble, travertine and limestone materials have been commonly used in kitchens and bathrooms in European cities for centuries.  The growth in natural stone availability has increased awareness and overall interest in using the product in areas that might not have been considered in the past.

All natural stones are not the same.  Certain materials perform better in particular areas.  Consult with an experienced stone importer, fabricator and installer when making your selections.  The quality of the stone itself, the fabrication and the templating and installation are reflected the final product.
