Grab bars improve home safety for seniors

By Randy Stow

We have heard statistics from countless studies that talk about home safety as we age.  They talk about the numbers of seniors that want to stay in their own home and familiar surroundings while maintaining their independence.

Those of us that study these statistics find most of seniors have lived in their homes for three or four decades.  When they were younger these homes were fine and they see no reason to change anything at this point.

If we look at the design trends that have taken place during the decades, these homes have obstacles and hazards that can steal the option of independence.

Although there are a number of solutions to discuss, I want to talk about grab bars specifically.  This is the single-most effective modification that can be made.

Grab bars serve as a double-edged sword.  They are the most visual change while being one of the most useful modifications.

Manufacturers have taken this dilemma into consideration and have produced a variety of shapes, colors, and textures.  Some standard sizes of stainless steel and white bars are available from local stores.  Other colors, textures, sizes and shapes are available through special order.

As mentioned, there are some styles available and used on a regular basis.  Not all these bars are acceptable, if we use the national guidelines. One of the main violations is the distance the bar stands off the wall.

Some extend as far as six inches between the wall and the back of the bar.  The national standard for this distance is a maximum of 1 ½ inches.  The risk factor is if you slip, your arm would pass through to the shoulder.

When installing the grab bars (specifically in the tub or shower) there are accepted methods of installation, which may be ineffective.

Drilling into the wall while hoping to hit a portion of a wooden stud (1 ½ -inch wide) or using the plastic anchors that are provided with so many styles is risky.  If you have ever put a grab bar in with either of these methods you know there was a doubt as to whether it would hold when the time came.

There is a product called Wing-It.  This grab bar anchor was designed to be installed through the tile or other sold surface material while intentionally missing the studs.  When installed correctly, each bar will hold up to 800 pounds of down weight.  Although these anchors are not cheap, they are a way to be sure of a successful installation.

The cost to install grab bars should be considered as an investment for your future independence.
