Aging in Place: Who, Why and How

Randy Stow CGR, CAPS
Home Access Solutions

Over the past few years we have been hearing about the impending arrival of the “Baby Boomer” generation. Many changes have been anticipated to accommodate the influx. There are services, products and new innovations that are flooding the marketplace. Many of the companies involved are here to monopolize on the business potential for this specialized market. The sale is the most important aspect to them.

Others work together with a common goal: to create safe, livable environments allowing those who want to, the opportunity to age in place gracefully, in their own home, in their own community. There is a thread that binds this second category of companies together, and that thread is comprised of compassion and understanding. There is a noticeable difference in the services you will receive.

There are many reasons to make changes to your home environment. Maybe a parent is moving in with you or a disabled family member that is too heavy to lift. The current trend would even suggest that you are a senior who just wants (demands) to stay in your own home.  You might be aware of the need to make changes to your home environment but not know who to call, who to trust, or even what your options are. You know something needs to be done, but what and how do I pay for it?  There is little government aid and limited coverage available through Medicare. For now, the primary method of payment is out of pocket.  As new companies open all the time, it becomes increasingly more important that you choose carefully.

Understand that there is more to creating a safe environment that will last a lifetime than a list of products and suggestions gathered from internet resources. Rarely will a single product provide more than an immediate solution. A true expert in this field will be able to not only determine an immediate need and offer a solution but anticipate the future progression of known illnesses and provide solutions that will last many years into the future. Modifications are not only disruptive and unpleasant to your daily life (for a short time) but can be expensive. Choosing the wrong service provider could lead to an incomplete project that will require expensive alterations and additions for years to come.

So where do you get answers to all these and other questions?

Just for this purpose, the Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) has initiated a new council. Referred to as the GHBA 50+ Housing Council, it is designed to be a one stop shop. One place to call. Within the council, there are representatives from many of the services needed by seniors such as Home Design and Remodeling, Home Evaluations, Financial, Durable Medical Equipment, Elevators, In Home Heath, Reverse Mortgage, New Living Developments and others.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has created the initial certification dealing with this topic. The Certified Aging in Place Specialists “CAPS” certification is earned by those who apply for and complete an educational and training program that teaches the basics as to working with the aging population. This certification should be a requirement for those offering service to you. As a group we all commit to provide service to the best of our abilities. The membership is constantly growing, expanding and being defined.

If you need assistance call Carrie Saxon at the GHBA: 281-970-8970 ext. 171 or CSaxon@ghba.org

For a list of the council members and CAPS certificate recipients, visit www.ghba.org.
If you are trying to help a family member in another city or state visit www.nahb.org to find the nearest 55+ council and a national list CAPS certificate recipients.

This council is interested in your thoughts and your input. Your input will allow us to grow in such a manor that we provide the services requested and needed. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the council or providing a venue to allow us to speak with your group, contact one of the board members for more information. Watch for us at each of the home shows found here in Houston throughout the coming months and years.
